Divination and Vision An exhibition of calligrams by Iranian artist Solmaz Naraghi

Divination and Vision is a three-day solo exhibition of calligrams by interdisciplinary artist Solmaz Naraghi, combined with a poetry performance. The work draws on the Iranian tradition of poetic divination—a practice of opening a book of poetry at random and interpreting its signs as a symbolic response to a personal concern about the future, something uncertain yet deeply significant to the participant.

In this performance, audience members are invited to step onto the stage, form an intention, and randomly select one of the calligram-designed cards. The performer, in the role of a fortune teller, then reads a text associated with the chosen image, offering an imagined response to the participant’s unspoken concern. At the same time, a video artwork based on the same calligram is displayed on screen.

Through a parodic engagement with the concept of divination, the artist has created short, contemporary poems that enable an interactive encounter with the audience. Solmaz Naraghi has previously published a collection of concrete poetry titled Shakhe-Nabat or The Book of Divination, selections of which will also be available in this exhibition.

This exhibition is organised by Jaleh Esfahani Cultural Foundation introducing works from the Persianate culture at its first Pop-UP gallery, at Unit 10 Bickels Yard, 151 Bermondsey Street SE1 3HA, opposite White Cube Gallery.
